Spring has finally arrived! It’s the time of year when you get to enjoy warmer weather, green grass, and open windows. It’s also the time of year where you freshen up your homes with a little spring cleaning. You dust, you wash windows, you may even de-clutter the garage. But there’s another aspect of spring cleaning that we think is the most important: tending to your jewelry box. Would you expect us to say anything else? We are jewelers after all!
To help you with your spring cleaning, we’ve put together some tips and tricks for you that will help keep your jewelry looking terrific season after season.
Evaluate and Organize Your Collection
Start by sorting through your jewelry box. Check clasps and fasteners. Set aside any pieces that need repairing or cleaning. This is a good time to make a list of your jewelry and take some digital photos for insurance purposes in case of disaster or theft.
If you find a piece that you don’t adore, consider having it redesigned into something you would wear. Our designers can help you create a one-of-a-kind piece you will love!
Note which pieces need professional cleaning and inspection and which pieces you’ll tidy up yourself.
Cleaning and Care
When it comes to your precious jewelry, a professional cleaning is always a good idea. Not only does it keep your pieces looking their best, it allows a trained professional to detect wear or damage. Between professional cleanings, however, there are some simple spring cleaning solutions you can do at home to help your gemstones shine. Here are a few tips to help you properly care for your jewelry.
Be Wary of Harmful Chemicals
Chlorine bleach or abrasives (such as household cleaners or toothpaste) should never be used when cleaning jewelry. Chemicals can damage some of the metals used to alloy gold for diamond settings and abrasives can scratch gold and other metals.
Be Gentle
Warm water, mild dish soap, and a super-soft bristle toothbrush are often enough to remove the daily gunk and grime that detracts from the sparkle of your jewelry. If you’re choosing a commercial cleaning product, please read the labels carefully and use only on the intended metal and gemstones.
Remember…All Drains Lead to the Ocean
You don’t want any Finding Nemo moments with your jewelry. Never clean your jewelry over the sink or anywhere with an open drain. This may seem obvious, but trust us when we say accidents happen. We’ve heard too many horror stories about rings being lost forever!
Stop In and Let us Bring Back the Sparkle
Visit us at least once a year for a professional cleaning and inspection of your precious pieces. It is our privilege to help you do your “spring cleaning” and keep your jewelry well-maintained and looking gorgeous for generations to come.
