When we think of summer, we often think of outdoor activities like swimming, gardening and spending time at the beach. These summer days of sun and fun are good for the soul, but if you’re not careful, they can wreak havoc on your jewelry.
Pool water, perspiration, sand, and sunscreen can cause problems for gems, pearls, and precious metals. Here are a few tips to keep your jewelry intact and looking its best during these lazy days of summer!
Gold - When heading to the beach, it’s best to leave your gold bling at home as sand, surf, and sunscreen can scratch and dull the finish. Chlorinated water in swimming pools can damage gold by eroding the nickel alloy in the metal and weaken prongs and settings. If contact with chlorine cannot be avoided, always rinse jewelry post-swim with fresh, lukewarm water.
Pearls - These beauties need a little TLC during the summer heat. Perspiration can weaken the cord on which they’re strung and chlorine can damage their luster. Be sure to wipe pearls after wearing to remove dirt, sweat, lotions, and oils.
Gemstones - Summer’s the perfect time to plant flowers and play sports. Just keep in mind that gemstones can be damaged or lost if their settings and prongs are weakened by outdoor activities. Nobody wants to sift through the dirt for a missing heirloom, so remove that ring when planting your petunias.
Watches - While some people like it hot, watches do not. Never leave your timepiece in a hot car and be sure to make sure yours is waterproof before taking a dip!
