Before miniaturization people used pocket watches, which often had covers and were carried in a pocket and attached to a watch chain. Watches evolved in the 1600s from spring powered clocks, which appeared in the 1400s. Today, watches have become a fashion piece with more than one function. Watches have become as ornate as other forms of fine jewelry with many styles of faces and bands.
